BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CANALS

The Heart of Birminghams Canals

Born out of the Industrial Revolution in the 18th Century, and a desperate need to transport raw materials and finished products across the country, these artificial waterways were created as the "motorways" of their day.

Pioneering engineers like James Brindley, Thomas Telford and others, built structures that have never been attempted before. It is a testament to their foresight, energy and skill that their efforts have endured, much of it over 200 years ago.

Buildings in harmony with the surrounding landscape

Their waterways carried across deep valleys on high aqueducts and embankments. Hills are crossed by flights of locks or are pierced by tunnels. Structures and canalside buildings were built in local materials to save transportation costs and so appear very much in harmony with the surrounding landscape.

From Heritage Marina, choose from Bosley, Ramsdell, Astbury, Sherborne Prince, Lothbury Lady and Marple narrowboats. Our base is located near the junction of the Macclesfield and Trent & Mersey Canals in Scholar Green, near Kidsgrove and is very well placed for a variety of cruising routes including the Cheshire & Four Counties Rings. For a more leisurely cruise, we are also ideally situated for a gentle week on the Macclesfield Canal or, through the spectacular Harecastle tunnel to the beautiful Caldon Canal.
